Deep Cove is the gateway to Indian Arm, a 18-kilometre glacial fjord surrounded by steep mountain walls, old-growth forest, and cascading waterfalls. The protected waters make it one of the best paddling destinations in the Vancouver area — calm enough for beginners, dramatic enough to impress anyone.

Kayaking Indian Arm

From the beach at Panorama Park, you can launch a kayak and be in the fjord within minutes. The most popular day trip is paddling north along the eastern shore to Jug Island, a small islet about 2 kilometres from the launch point. It makes a perfect rest stop with views back down the arm toward the village.

More ambitious paddlers continue up Indian Arm to Granite Falls, a striking waterfall about 8 kilometres from Deep Cove. The paddle takes roughly 2 to 3 hours each way depending on conditions and fitness. Along the way you pass Racoon Island, the remnants of old logging camps, and increasingly wild shoreline. Bald eagles are a common sight, and harbour seals often pop up beside your kayak.

Multi-Day Trips

Indian Arm Provincial Park has designated camping areas at Twin Islands and Granite Falls. A two-day trip — paddling up to camp overnight and returning the next morning — is one of the best outdoor experiences accessible from Vancouver. You sleep under the stars in a fjord that feels completely remote, despite being less than an hour from the city. Guided multi-day trips are available from local operators and include all equipment, food, and instruction.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

SUP has exploded in popularity at Deep Cove. The sheltered cove at Panorama Park is ideal for beginners — the water is calm in the morning before the afternoon winds pick up. Most rental shops offer boards by the hour and provide a brief safety orientation. Experienced paddlers often head out into Indian Arm for longer excursions, though the open water can get choppy in the afternoon.

Rental Information

Several operators in the village offer kayak and SUP rentals. Single kayaks, double kayaks, and paddleboards are all available by the hour or the day. Reservations are strongly recommended on summer weekends — walk-up availability can be limited. Most operators also rent dry bags, spray skirts, and other accessories. Typical pricing runs from $30–50 per hour for a single kayak and $20–30 per hour for a SUP.

Guided Tours

If you are new to kayaking or want a guided experience, several companies run half-day and full-day tours of Indian Arm. Tours typically include all equipment, instruction, and a guide who knows the fjord's history and wildlife. Sunset tours are particularly popular — paddling back to Deep Cove as the sun drops behind the mountains is unforgettable.

Best Time to Paddle

The kayaking season runs from roughly May through October, though some operators rent year-round to experienced paddlers. The best conditions are early morning in summer — calm water, warm temperatures, and soft light on the mountains. July and August offer the warmest water temperatures, though Indian Arm remains cold year-round. Spring and fall bring fewer crowds and dramatic skies.
